The best of traditional Chinese martial arts and modern training methods combined in a pragmatic system of combatives and self-defense!

GM. Kwan Kwok Fai with GM. Liu Shao Quan.
Here at the Bak Mei Chin-na San-da Academy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, we know that martial arts - like anything in life - must evolve: that while it is important to honour our roots, life and society changes, and so must we.
Our system teaches traditional Bak Mei kung fu - a rare Southern Chinese boxing system known for it's in-fighting, short power and sheer ferocity.
Translation:
Bak Mei = White Eyebrow
Chin-na = Joint locking
San-da = Striking

Why Bak Mei Chin-na San-da Academy (BMCSA)?
More and more schools of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts focus on forms or kuen. While they are an important part of training, they are not the be-all and end-all. Simply put, anyone who only does forms and thinks they are ready to defend themselves and their families is living in a fantasy.
At Bak Mei Academy, we focus on the "4 Pillars of Martial Arts Training":
1. Conditioning: Including Iron Palm, Iron Body, strength & cardiovascular training, etc.
2. Combative Applications: This includes Chin-Na (grappling and joint manipulation) and San-Da (sparring)
3. Tradition: This includes forms training, as well as the verbal traditions (such as teaching stories and instructional poems) passed down from master to student since the beginning of the style.
4. Mental / Spiritual Development: We place a great deal of focus on developing a "fighter's mindset": the ability to "switch on" and aggressively attack an attacker. We also practice meditation and Chi Gung (Yin) to balance out the more Yang aspects of our training.
We look at it this way: a table needs 4 legs to support itself properly - if even one is missing, it is much more likely to fall down...
We're no cookie-cutter martial arts studio: we custom tailor all our training to the individual - we value quality over quantity.

No Secrets
Unlike many Traditional Chinese Martial Arts schools, we don't impose needless limitations on our students based on race, gender or beliefs - all the "treasures" of this rare style will be revealed as you progress.
There are no secrets here - every method of power generation, every "hidden" form, every deadly technique, every Iron Body method: every hidden detail normally available only to Chinese disciples is available to you.
Our only expectations from our students when training are that we leave our egos at the door, that we treat everyone with respect, and train to the utmost of our ability - which is the true essence of kung fu!
